Artist statement: Nixon’s series of works are objects collected from a far away place, Japan. Nixon has been back to Japan a couple of times since his year in Kyoto 1996. He brings back objects from his travels which he can draw. He loves the objects “personalities” and tries to reflect and enhance them in his illustrations. For "Popped Open Hana" the addition of Chine collé, a printmaking technique adding coloured paper to a print and putting it through the press, applies torn shapes of flowers to each composition adding a sense of playfulness to the work. Each work has 5 flowers one for each petal of a cherry blossom. In some of the pieces Nixon shows almost hidden elements too, the viewer needing to look at the work at just the right angle, interacting an engaging with the pieces.
